My children laughed
They played and giggled
Took turns
Hugged and
Kissed each other’s scraped knees
And I
Held my bated breath
Waiting
For the first fist to fall
The angry word
The mood to turn
The horrors to rise
But all too soon
the day was spent
Stories were read,
Lap on lap on lap
No fights over who sat where
T H E N
I sang them to sleep
And
As the second song faded
They were asleep
Snoring softly
Me, in my disbelief,
Thinking
“When did this happen?
When did I raise
Two little kids
Who turned into
Two good friends?”
If only for a day
I stumbled upon
A day
When horror passes
A day
Of
Perfect
Bliss.
